Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

• This is a responsible service position in which the incumbent is in charge of the staff for the downtown campus steam and chilled water plant. Employees of this class are distinguished from Assistant Stationary Engineers by virtue of the expanded scope of work with emphasis on major repairs, installations, service and operations versus the routine operations and minor repairs assigned to the Assistant Stationary Engineers. The employee reports directly to and works under general supervision from the Building Manager and supervision is exercised over Stationary and HVAC Service Engineers. Does related work as required.
• Oversees the work of subordinate staff;
• Installs and services boilers, air conditioning systems, air compressors, pneumatic systems, duct work and computer hardware for control systems, by measuring pipes, soldering or brazing metals, wiring control systems, etc.;
• Repairs steam and hot water leaks, motors, pumps, steam traps, air handling units and all other HVAC equipment and components including refrigeration equipment;
• Performs preventive maintenance to HVAC equipment by changing oil, filters, belts, bearings. etc.; Identifies and solves problems with electric controls, heating systems and refrigeration systems; Responds to maintenance work requests and tenant complaints;
• Identifies, suggests, and implements energy conservation measures;
• Tests and treats water used in air conditioning systems in order to prevent growth of fungi and bacteria;
• Oversees and participates in the operation and maintenance of HVAC systems and equipment; Operates and services Energy Management Systems and its Direct Digital Controls.
• Supervises time keeping and adherence to work rules by the assigned staff as developed by Facilities Management. Responsible for discipline and training of staff.

Required Qualifications

• Must currently hold the Monroe County Civil Service title of Supervising, HVAC Service Engineer or meet the following minimum qualifications to be eligible to take the next exam given for this title.
In addition, candidate must place among the top three candidates on the eligible list in order to be eligible for a permanent appointment.
•Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus either: A) six years of paid full time or its part time equivalent experience * in installation, maintenance and service of HVAC systems found in commercial or public buildings, four years of which must have included heating, and the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration equipment, AND three years of the required six years must have been in a supervisory** capacity; OR B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree or Certificate in HVAC, plus four years of paid full time or its part time equivalent experience in installation, maintenance and service of HVAC systems found in commercial or public buildings, two years of which must have included heating, and the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration equipment, AND two years of the required four years must have been working in a supervisory capacity; OR C) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Air Conditioning Engineering or related field, plus two years of paid full time or its part time supervisory** experience* in installation, maintenance and service HVAC systems found in commercial or public buildings that included heating, and the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration equipment: OR D) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of A), B), and C) above.
*Minor repair and preventative tasks such as changing filters and belts and lubrication of HVAC and refrigeration equipment will not be considered qualifying experience.

  • Supervisory capacity is defined as responsibility for direction and control of subordinate employees. This includes planning for individual’s in a work group. Typical duties include assigning and reviewing work, evaluating performance, maintaining work standards, implementing procedural changes and dealing with problems of absenteeism, morale and discipline.
    If you are appointed, you will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
    Must meet the MCC eligibility requirements in order to drive College vehicles.
    • Must be a Monroe County Resident.
Preferred Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of HVAC systems including Energy Management Systems, operation and repair of refrigeration equipment, electrical equipment, boilers and heat pumps; thorough knowledge of types of equipment and appropriate servicing needs of systems; thorough knowledge of mechanical principles; thorough knowledge of possible dangers to health and safety such as asbestos, insulation wastes, chemicals, etc.; thorough knowledge of existing

HVAC equipment and how it works; thorough knowledge of heating and cooling systems ; thorough knowledge of College safety, regulations and devices; thorough knowledge of resources for safety information; ability to analyze servicing needs and provide verbal and written descriptions of problems and observations; ability to analyze servicing needs and provide verbal and written descriptions of problems and observations; ability to read warranty specifications, blue-prints installation manuals, maintenance manuals, wiring and piping schematics, flyers and technical books; ability to apply appropriate information to present systems, problems in installation, future servicing, etc.; ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide as used in mathematical formulas; ability to relate mechanical principles to problems; ability to observe and analyze jobs; supervisory ability; mechanical ability; health commensurate with the demands of the position.

Class 7G Cooling tower license
Stationary Engineers license class 2 or higher
